Because centrism is arbitrary. It’s taking a position between two poles, wherever they are placed – not by you, but on your behalf by the Muppet Christmas Carol Gonzo & Rizzo shirt and I love this prevailing culture or forces that be. Centrism is essentially the status quo that uses words such as ‘nuance’ and ‘compromise’ in order to make their opinions seem more enlightened. They flitter between mild left wing and right wing policies but will never do anything that actually leads to their implementation/ any change. To give you a recent example: centrists will praise and support black rights and historical figures such as MLK but will either remain silent or condemn any actual movement such as BLM in 2020. In America, the “center” as defined by media, politicians, corporations, and other elite institutions woulsnt be recognized as “center” in most other developed countries. It would be recognized as “center-right.” Because of the lack of regulation and large amount of powerful/monied interests essentially owning politicians, America’s center of power skews further to the right (out of step with most of its own populace).

The left dislikes centrism because of this. The current US right dislikes centrism because they’re so extreme, they see people in the Muppet Christmas Carol Gonzo & Rizzo shirt and I love this center-right as being liberals/not to be trusted. Centrists are fine if you don’t have reactionary elements in your political spectrum. The minute you have a group that does not care about the law, anyone sitting on a fence is at best a milksop, at worst a coward. Because most people who say they are centrist actually don’t put the effort in to understand what their morals and values really are. Centerist don’t tend to be passionate enough to change things. They are more likely to keep the status quo and not rock the boat. They worry more about both sides being heard than evaluating the issue at hand. I used to be a centrist. It was because I wanted everything to be fair and equal. It’s not. It’s better to embrace the change and ideals you approve than wait for it to change.
