It’s what you make of it. I love working on a variety of projects and within an interdisciplinary team. I learn so much about other resources and I feel like I do a lot for my resource through their projects (and my own projects). That said, leadership on my Forest is incredibly toxic. Not my direct supervisor, but their supervisor. Like active gaslighting of the line officers and it trickles down. Constant turnover makes it very hard to establish working relationships and get projects done. Very little support for my program too. Also, the FEVS is not representative of much of the FS. You have to remember a good chunk of the FS is wildfire, and I’d wager they are over represented in the survey. They’ve been screwed over in pay and job classification for years, which has really boiled to a head in recent years, so my guess is if you looked at the survey results without those from the fire side, it would paint a much different picture, if still not perfect. Overall my region tries really hard to keep employees happy, they are just hamstrung by all the political and regulatory bullshit in some aspects. I was there for years at both the region and national office and with USDA on special projects. Yes FEVS is correct. In years past the montra was that FEVS only talks to the disgrunted and poor performers then they paid for a survey of the entire work force and the numbers went down further.

It was a great place to start a federal career and makes you appreciate better agencies. Last I looked it was 420 out of 435 sub agencies. If this is your only offer then take it and put up with the BS, but if you have other offers seriously consider. Like others have said it depends on the Region and Forest (Funny thing is I hear that a lot, which leads me to believe good forest are the exception and not the rule). Personally I’ve been with the USFS three years and I am burnt out and desperate to get out. I’ve seen a lot of people conduct a mass exodus lately so I doubt it’s just me. Depends where you are. I got my first perm job with usfs and did not enjoy it at all. The job I took was absolutely nothing like the description, the supervisor was awful, the office was completely unorganized. I went back to DOI before I finished a full year there. Perm Forester. My experience has been largely positive. I’ve worked on two Forests, two duty locations. Both offices had plenty of bright, motivated folks trying to further the mission. Both my supervisors have been outstanding and genuinely cared for their employees. Both atmospheres were relaxed – I’m having a good time. I’ve also worked in corporate America before so maybe I’ve just been conditioned to being treated like trash so much that working for the government seems better than it actually is.
