I have no desire to move beyond my GS 12 level because of the politics involved in working for a land management agency. I think the higher up you go, the more you have to walk the line and compromise what you think it right, in my case the science behind decisions. I have experienced this is my previous positions with the BLM and USFWS, so it isn’t unique to the FS. That said, if this is your opportunity to get your foot in the door with a federal agency, then take it and move on in a few years if it isn’t working out for one reason or another.
