Besides the traveling, your limited mobility was definitely a factor but did you ever get tested to see if you had any genetic components that may make you more susceptible to blood clots? Oh lord, what DIDN’T I get tested for? My vascular doctor left no stone unturned, even sickle cell disease (I am a white Eastern European woman… sickle cell is something we don’t really get), factor XI and a bunch of other random stuff. Nada, zilch, rien. It literally was idiopathic, which makes it so much scarier tbh. Yeah unfortunately not just an old/fat thing. I was F31 the first time I had a pulmonary embolism. I had a BMI of 21 and a body fat percentage of 18%. No drinking or smoking. I got my second PE less than a year later, and have to be on a large dose of blood thinners for life. I all of a sudden got breathless after walking 50m, had severe chest pain for 9-11 months, my hair fell out and I gained 20% of my body weight. I will always have reduced lung function due to the scarring and will not be allowed to labor naturally due to the risks of catastrophic bleeding. i didnt smoke and had maybe 3 standard drinks a week.

This!! I got my first pulmonary embolism at 31 and my second at 32. They are often fatal and are life altering. Everyone should be wearing compression garments on flights, staying very hydrated, stretching often and abstaining from alcohol. I was on BC too, and now completely banned from anything that contains estrogen (menopause will be so fun!).
