In the UK when you reach the age of 70, your driving licence expires but, this doesn’t mean you have to stop driving. If you want to continue, you just need to renew your licence. You need to renew it every 3yrs after that & renewal is free of charge. In America, we have very little public transportation infrastructure, especially in the south, so it’s easier to not regulate driving at older ages than make the investment. I think here after ur old enough u gotta do some tests every 5 years to prove that u haven’t gone blind or something I don’t think that people who aren’t fit to drive should be driving. However, I know that an elderly person’s freedom and independence is very much dependent on having a driver’s license. In Australia once you pass 70 (I think) you need to have a medical done every few years and pass a driving test. And then after another older age it’s every year I don’t remember details on years but I know my dad at 79 and mom at 70 both need to go thru checks every few years in Finland. Dad just recently did it and he apparently had to talk to some dude for 40 minutes, just random shit, purpose apparently was just to sniff around if there was hint of any memory issues. Because older drivers (ages 65 to 74 and 75 and over) are by far the safest drivers on the road. This is not necessarily because they are better drivers. They drive less frequently, for shorter distances, and at slower speeds.
