I knew a guy once who has a genetic defect that causes the Mike Sorrentino Don’t Be A Chooch Shirt besides I will buy this cilia in your inner ear to simply not develop. Everything else is there, but not those fine hairs to translate sound to electrical impulses to the brain. He hears nothing. In fact, I’d assume that the part of the brain used for hearing is dedicated to something else, like more acute vision. It kind of depends on the type of deafness. It’s the same as how some legally blind people have a small amount of vision while others can’t see anything whatsoever. Some people are deaf but they still have extremely limited hearing while others have none whatsoever. I know a person who is deaf but can hear noise if you tell as loud as you can. They can’t make out what you said but they can hear the noise. I also know other people who don’t hear any noise I make no matter how loud I am. I do wonder though if they can experience phantom sounds or things like tinnitus if they’re completely deaf. If a person is completely deaf I don’t think they hear anything. I have genetic hearing loss and I can’t hear very high and low pitches/tones. I never realized how bad it was until we did an exercise in a physics class on frequencies. I was the only person who couldn’t hear them all. Without hearing aids everything sounds duller, people speaking in another room sounds like whispering: “spspsps”. In a quiet room with hearing aids I can hear almost as well as anyone else, but in a noisy place everything is amplified and it’s hard to pick out the voice you want to listen to. When I was younger (and hearing aids were less advanced) I didn’t really care about music. Now I wonder if that was because I couldn’t hear all the notes, so it sounded wrong.

What about inner monologue? I know not every hearing person has it but could there be a chance that deaf people could have something like that especially if they weren’t always deaf? I know this is a really stupid question because if you never hear your voice how could you have inner monologue but how do they think? I think with my inner voice. I woke up one day last week and I can no longer hear sounds at 8000hz. That one frequency being gone makes everything sound muffled What is that like? So that means. They don’t do any self talk? He hears very little without them and can sleep through a thunderstorm. He basically switches off the sounds of the world when he takes them out. He doesn’t hear anything else.
