Being good in school, particularly in levels lower than college. It’s most all about the Mike Moffat Boston Bruins 1981 Hockey T-Shirt But I will love this ability to memorize content and recite it on command. What we often call “street smarts” is simply not taught at all. The ability to take in observable information, and make judgements on situations or people is just not present. Yet all good students know what year Columbus landed. Human brains are complex. Different people are really good at different things. But school kind of only rewards a single kind of person. Someone who can sit still, write in a notebook, pay attention and recite what the teacher teaches. Have you ever had the experience of a teacher writing a test question that takes 2 areas of knowledge that were taught separately and mashes them together? There’s a certain kind of “smart” kid who just fails to grasp that the concepts are related at all or that the knowledge from one page of the book can be applied to another page. They say things like “this was never covered in class” and “this was not in the book”

In my first year university physics class the Mike Moffat Boston Bruins 1981 Hockey T-Shirt But I will love this prof had us do an exercise. Go outside the building and guess at the number of windows. For every 1 window away from the real answer you got a 30 second penalty. We all ran outside and started counting. 1 person ran outside, looked at the building and ran back inside. He didn’t count, he just looked and guessed. He was off by 5, but was 2 minutes ahead of the next fastest person (who was only off by 1), and it took another minute for the 3rd person (who had the correct number) to come in. The 2 wrong people tied for first, the correct person got third (or second, depending on how you count a tie). But the point is, speed and accuracy are linked. Sometimes it’s better to be fast, sometimes it’s better to be right but most of life sits somewhere in the middle.
