There are people who will never get math or science, but excel in the arts or languages or people skills or practical trades, etc.. But in school, they’re seen as “dumb” because long division never made sense to them. I look at an electrical problem with the eye of “oh man, I’d have to do a dozen things and maybe it will work.” and it will take me forever. Or I can hire an electrician who will say “no problem” and have it set up in an hour. Doesn’t mean either one of is smarter than the other, just different experiences and ways of looking at things.

I work with PhD professors and sometimes it’s hard to believe they have phd’s. What I’ve learned is that they have very specialized intelligence in their field, but basically lack smarts in anything else. And in school, you know what’s expected of you, and you’re given the material to make it happen. If you have the time to work through problems, you’ll get good grades whether you’re really that smart or not. My analytical abilities are really rather good, but retention ability is balls. So, I tend to struggle at times simply due to bad memory, but if I have all the pieces, well I’ve been called a genius. I don’t see how speed of tasks correlates at all to intelligence. Being “slow” doesn’t mean taking a long time when referencing intelligence, it means not getting things, period. I’m an only child, was in the gifted program in elementary and middle schools, top scores on standardized tests, okay grades in high school because I mentally checked out and didn’t care that much, had honors in college and I take my time to do most things. I don’t see the point of hurrying for no reason. I point out being an only child because I did not compete with a sibling for time, whether it was chores, eating, or showers, so I’m much slower than people I’ve been around who did compete for time. She may have ADD, most girls with it who were high functioning never got diagnosed. I’m certain I have it, but don’t have any interest in testing right now. Maybe later, and this is fully a symptom.
