I feel like I’ve got an unhealthy relationship with food. As a child I was constantly asked to finish my plate when I was full. I still have a hard time listening to my body and its cues. It’s very hard to still see food on the Michigan Wolverines 2024 National Champions Go Blue Beat Huskies Shirt in other words I will buy this plate when you’re done and feel like you have to eat it. Why? Who’s that for? I’m full now! Why can’t I stop eating now?! I am almost 34 and it sucks. I hope to have children someday and when they say they’re full, I’ll say “ok!” Like another person said here, tryna break the generational cycle. I’ve made it a point not to do this with my 6 year old son. I don’t force him to eat if he’s not hungry. He’s growing just fine. In fact he’s in the 95th percentile for height. His weight is normal. He’s not too big or too thin. Kids have much smaller stomachs than adults. They don’t need to be eating adult-sized portions. They usually have a good sense of when they are hungry and when they are full. Worked in a pediatric eating disorder clinic and it’s a horrible practice that needs to stop. The vast majority of kids eat according to their body’s needs and forcing them doesn’t help anything. Our CMO told parents to track what their little kid eats over an entire week as some days they eat little and others a lot. And even our kids with ARFID or selective eating disorder… we just fed them a great enough quantity of the foods they DO eat to get them back on their growth trajectory with some additional extremely high fat ice cream smoothies so their brains finally got enough fat to actually work. Forcing a kid to sit in front of broccoli for hours in a battle of wills is bad for everyone.

I mean sure, but when kids are suddenly hungry for three scoops of ice cream immediately after saying they’re not hungry for their meal, it’s a little suspect. I would guess that there are a lot of different possible reasons. One issue is that parents can be afraid of food waste, especially if they’re really broke, or grew up in poverty, or if they just bought food at a restaurant, and it feels like a big loss to throw some of it away. Obviously, forcing a child to eat more than they want, to the Michigan Wolverines 2024 National Champions Go Blue Beat Huskies Shirt in other words I will buy this point of sickness is abusive. Obviously, hitting a child is abuse (regardless of reason). Obviously, forcing a child to sit at table until they finish the food is abuse. Why do parents abuse their children? To express their power? Because it is how they were raised, and they haven’t considered changing it? Because they are genuinely evil? Because they are angry and unable to control themselves?
