My kids is 5. He will say he’s hungry. I cook him dinner. I give him choices for dinner. He chooses. I cook it. He then takes 2 bites and says I’m full. I say that’s ok, I’ll put it aside and you can have it when your hungry. It’s whoever’s fault for ordering them an adult sized meal, most kids won’t eat that much at one time. But also kids will just forget to eat and then become cranky later when they realize they’re still hungry, so urging them to finish their food can be a good thing. Kids fight you on everything. Eating their food is one. If a parent wants to let them walk off from the dinner table and watch YouTube while everyone else eats, that’s their choice. If a parent wants to instill healthy eating habits and structure, that’s a choice too.

Most parents that give a **** go through a process of figuring out what works. Sometimes it’s a balance. Sometimes it’s hanging rewards/consequences over their head. In my experience, the parents that let their kids eat some cheetos and fruit juice instead of a real meal is simply because they don’t want to deal with it. My children all eat what they can manage. They’re given a mix of things to eat and the only thing I’ll push them to eat is the vegetables if they haven’t eaten any already. But not so they’re stuffed. My mom would dump the contents of a can into a bowl (like green beans or spinach or whatever), heat up the veggie and serve it. No seasoning whatsoever, still suspended in the can liquid. Then force me to eat it……this was every dinner of my childhood. She thought microwaved can juice and veggies were delicious. I thought it all tasted like metal and mush. Not to mention the inevitable digestive upset I would deal with after every meal. It’s no wonder my classmates thought I was anorexic in middle school.
