Real change won’t come unless the Michael Bunting Canadian professional ice hockey winger for the Pittsburgh Penguins T-Shirt and by the same token and public education system is dismantled to some extent. Throwing money at schooling has not helped. I propose to turn high school years into what college is right now (specialized career pathing for a diploma). Having mentorship programs for students upon completion of high school. These two changes will better incentivize students for autonomy and hopefully prepare them for the world. But it also will lead to less rigid structure leading to some students falling through who either just don’t care about school or cause too many problems. Not sure if it’s just my kids school personally but their books are online for some classes and not for others. I also don’t feel what they use is user friendly especially for younger kids. If the books are online every subject is in a different place with a different log in. Maybe it won’t help and I’m just old fashioned by having a physical book at school and at home is nice. I could then check my kids grades and see they’re struggling with chapter 3 and help them.

As a kids I know I hated carrying them but I have vivid memories of my parents helping me. When in college I always opted for a hard copy and online version. Also a good old planner in elementary school to learn to write assignments down so it’s black in white and front of you. I believe this helps with time management skills. My 1st grader who’s kindergarten and 1st grade teach use planners in night and day ahead of my older daughter who’s so disorganized no matter what we do. None of her teachers used them. Then maybe in middle school leave it up to the Michael Bunting Canadian professional ice hockey winger for the Pittsburgh Penguins T-Shirt and by the same token and kids. Ban phones. Every study points to phones being horrible for mental health, physical and cognitive development, emotional self regulation, etc…if they need to contact adults or vise versa, we have landlines. I have a no phones policy, and when I have to take them just for the class period, you would swear I’d have taken away an addict’s heroin needle… Homework. Sorry, but kids are not as busy as they think they are, even if they’re working and doing extracurriculars. They need reinforcement of skills and it’s clear classroom practice alone is not enough. It teaches them time management instead of sitting on their phones for hours on end when they get home.
