You can actually see one of these 3 reel cameras from this film in person at the Merry Vegan Christmas Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Academy of Motion Pictures museum in Los Angeles. Cool stuff. The article includes videos. They are massive! And apparently the camera running three reels was so loud they had to enclose them so keep from ruining the sound of the movie! That is a sound blimp, and it typically weighed more than the camera. Arri is a company that’s been making motion-picture cameras since forever, and when they invented the self-blimped camera back in the late 60s or early 70s (16mm came first, then 35mm), it changed everything. You could shoot a scene in an actual moving car, recording the dialogue while shooting, and you didn’t have to loop it later or shoot it with rear projection or anything. It was small! And, within ten years, the Steadicam gets invented, and now you can do just about anything. I think the Arriflex 35BL is the most important invention to happen to cinema between color photography and photorealistic CGI models, as far as being influential on how films look today.

I just really like the Merry Vegan Christmas Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this technical aspects of filmmaking. It’s a history of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering… today, it’s electronic and software engineering. There’s stuff that happens at the production level, the post-production level, and the exhibition level. It’s this amazing process that starts with light going into a lens and ends with light coming out of a lens. I was a projectionist back in college when everything was still 35mm. Brain wraps, splices breaking, moving the films (they weighed probably 75 lbs when assembled), it was one of the jobs I had that I really enjoyed. I stopped right as DLP started to emerge, and it wasn’t a year or two after that that they got rid of all but 1-35mm projector, and had DLP’s for the rest of the screens.
