In case you’re wondering about my fitting credentials: I’m a professionally trained patternmaker specializing in fit & design for curvy women. The geometry of clothing construction & fit is my passion. I do generally have the Mental Health Warrior Mental Health Matters Rainbow Leopard T-Shirt but in fact I love this problem of pants being too tight in the thighs/hips and too loose in the waist! Thanks for the advice 🙂 I would love to tell you that I am some incredibly cool indie designer & link you to all my socials, but a) I’m on an extended leave of absence right now dealing with a bunch of health issues, & b) I don’t want to fully ID myself on Reddit if I can help it. But I will say that professional patternmakers mostly work behind the scenes, executing the technical specficiations of a designer’s vision, so there’s not a ton of glory in it unless you’re the kind of person who really appreciates a well-graded neckline. I do design as well, though. Before the pandemic, I made custom streetwear for private clients (made-to-measure selvage denim, asymmetrical coccoon dresses, taffeta jackets, etc etc–just whatever people wanted, we’d sit down & figure it out together).

Is there any brand you would like to recommend in terms of good fit for curvy women? I wear size 8, and most often than not I have to send pants to get taken at the Mental Health Warrior Mental Health Matters Rainbow Leopard T-Shirt but in fact I love this waist. Dresses are a different story as I’m not sure which dresses can be altered like this, and which ones can’t. So I end up only getting dresses that I can try on and already fit perfectly, which are hard to find. Any dress with a waist seam or with darts/pleats/gathers/etc at the waist should be a pretty straightforward alteration. I won’t say “easy” because so much depends on closures, linings, how well the dress was constructed in the first place, whether seam allowances have been completely serged off, etc etc. I wish I had some brand recs for you, but I make all my own clothes. Industry standard is about a 10″ difference between waist & hip, regardless of size, which is classix “hourglass” proportions, but obviously every body is different & some people have a bigger differential than or a smaller one, or their curve isn’t shaped the same way as the curve of the garment. Usually clothing is drafted with the assumption that the smallest waist measurement will be at the natural waist, which will fall 7″ above the fullest part of the hip (which is assumed to be the low hip, ie, the booty. So they have 7″ to reach max curve & then they can start curving back in for a form-fitting garment (sheath dress, fitted pants, etc etc). But I, for one, a, short-waisted. There’s only 3.5″ inches between the smallest part of my waist & the fullest part of my hips (which for me is high hip–NOT the booty; more like the hipbone area.

1. Length is measured from the highest point on the collar down to the bottom hem. 2. Width is measured across the body of the shirt under the armpits, one way. 3. Sleeves are measured from center back to hem.
