Your salary is also often based on cost of living in the Mason Marchment Canadian professional ice hockey forward for the Dallas Stars T-Shirt and by the same token and area in the U.S. I’m a software engineer in Colorado, if I move to San Francisco I could make 50% more but cost of living will be more as well. Where in the US can you get “healthcare and childcare is already included in my taxes, mortgage is 1200, we don’t need a car, public transport for my entire family is 300/month?” Idk I work for my city so all my healthcare shit is fairly cheap and it covers a decent amount. Childcare is expensive in the states I just got lucky that my girls parents live near us. As for mortgage mines only $600 I usually pay an extra $100, public transportation is ok not great in my city, but my cars paid off so I’m only paying about $20- $60 in gas a week. It depends on your location in the US or location in the EU. We have to compare something though and averages would be a good place to start

1k car = 2 cars including insurance. Seemed reasonable at the Mason Marchment Canadian professional ice hockey forward for the Dallas Stars T-Shirt and by the same token and time. Now that I spend 300 EUR on public transport for the family including 2 commuter tickets the 1k seems silly haha Someone who is competitive in their profession at the 45th percentile in the US is competitive at the 75th percentile in the EU. I’m in a similar income percentile in the Netherlands as I was in the US. Also I think your numbers are before taxes, not after? Or maybe I’m wrong on that, don’t know your source. Yes, but what were you doing ??? OP is absolutely correct. For highly skilled jobs, the salaries in the US are 2-5X other countries. We needed 2 cars as a family. Didn’t seem that crazy for US standards, 1000 USD a month including insurance for 2 cars. $1000/mo on car expenses is insane for a family making $72,000. This isn’t a COL issue, it’s a budgeting issue. There’s a QOL quotient at play here, too. There’s more to life for a lot of us than living in tract housing and taking the train everywhere. Somehow there’s a whole subset of people who have convinced themselves that driving yourself privately in a car at anytime you’d like anywhere you’d like is somehow the signal of a terrible life compared to taking a train and bus at specific times of day to specific places.
