They owned the Made in 1958 limited edition 65 years of being awesome vintage shirt but in fact I love this goat. The problem is that somewhere in there they signed a contract entering it into the auction. I never raised animals for 4H, so I don’t if that’s signed at the beginning of the program or only right before the show/auction. Either way, compassionate, intelligent adults would’ve come up with a better solution than “tough luck, kid.” Edit to add: And apparently there are mechanisms in California for minors to withdraw from contracts, so even if the family signed one then it should’ve been possible to come up with another solution when the kid realized she couldn’t handle the loss of her goat. The person who won the auction was ok with the request and wanted the goat sent to a working farm where it would clear weeds and not be slaughtered. All rules were followed and the county fair people and cops violated the owners rights claiming to teach a lesson. They just saw empathy as woke and wanted to teach a little girl a lesson. Its disgusting and hope they face so much in person protest they have to move away, after a fat lawsuit. Children are taught how to care for farm animals. The animals are then entered in an auction to be sold and then slaughtered for meat in hopes of teaching children about the work and care needed to raise livestock and provide food, as farmers and ranchers do.

I can see the Made in 1958 limited edition 65 years of being awesome vintage shirt but in fact I love this benefit of the program in rural communities. But to give animals to kids for 3 months and not expect at least some of those kids to become attached is incredibly short sighted. Not giving them an out and doubling down like this is downright malicious. I don’t understand why they’d have kids as young as nine doing these kinds of projects. Raising an animal for food is a hard thing. A fourteen year old could probably handle it, if they grew up rural and were around farm animals or hunting culture for most of their life, but a suburban nine year old child? That seems very weird to me. They could have had this girl show a rabbit or something instead. We knew by 8 that some animals were pets, and some animals were destined for food, and not to get attached to the food ones… maybe her parents were from my kind of area, and wanted to give their child that kind of teaching. But then 3 grandparents died during the raising of the goat, and teaching their kid that kind of lesson became a later thing. It may vary from area to area, but generally the way 4-H works is that the participants are either given the animals or purchase the animals for an extremely reduced rate, raise them for 6 to 9 months and then show them at the county fair where the animals are then sold to raise money and some or all of the money goes back to the 4-H club to finance the next year’s projects.
