The competition at Penn has infinitely more to do with its pre-professional focus, particularly in Wharton but that culture of corporate competition permeates all four of the Life Would Be So Boring Without Squirrel Gift Gray T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this undergraduate schools because we all attend many of the same classes. Also, I’m sure that the competition over those departmental awards isn’t going to decrease any with this decision. Department awards have some cohesive value. A 3.5+ GPA means a completely different thing in an English department compared to a Physics department. Yet both fall under the school of College of Liberal Arts at the colleges I’ve been to. School-wide awards for GPA are generally useless for this reason, yet graduates may end up pursuing shared ends (I.e. medical school, law school)

The level of performance it indicates literally just ends up being whatever GPA cutoff it’s set at; it adds no info beyond what the GPA is, which employers and grad admissions already know The distinction between a 3.49, a 3.5, and a 3.51 is meaningless, yet a Dean’s Award set at a 3.5 provides an inflation of two of them You say this, but we need to think about the real victims of this: kids who parents are totally down their throat on performance, who are receptive to “I’ve made Dean’s List!” which prevented them from prodding more. These kids now gotta say “I have a 3.51 GPA” and are now gonna get slammed with questions as to why it’s not a 4.0
