That’s true. Right now in Italy the Let’s Make Diabetes Extinct Diabetes Awareness Dragon T-rex T-Shirt in contrast I will get this far-right / post-fascist Meloni is planning a power grab, and I‘m hard pressed to find articles that do not normalize this as a technocratic government efficiency reform. But it’s fine, she likes Lord of the Rings! (Just ignore that she uses it to advance her far right racism, though…) I wish the US had ranked choice voting like Australia (and other countries) have. In one election several years back, I seriously voted for the Australian Sex Party. Despite the inflammatory name, their values strongly aligned with mine (legalization of same sex marriage, decriminalization of drugs, protection for sex workers, equality for First Nations people etc.), but I didn’t throw away my vote, because I put the Labor party second. If the Australian Sex Party didn’t get 50% of the vote to win a seat (which they didn’t), my next choice got the vote, and if they didn’t win, it repeated down the line until one of my picks got 50% of the vote. In Australia, it’s pretty difficult to piss away your vote.

Elections in the Let’s Make Diabetes Extinct Diabetes Awareness Dragon T-rex T-Shirt in contrast I will get this US would be better if people could vote for whatever candidate and party they liked, knowing that if their first choice didn’t win, their vote would still count for something, because then you wouldn’t feel bad about putting an independent first, and a Democrat or Republican second, knowing they’d still get the vote in case the independent didn’t win. FWIW, Nevada (a state that borders California to the east and one of the seven to ten that actually decides who becomes President) voted for ranked choice in 2022 and I believe other states have been pushing more loudly for this. Live in a place with free for all primary and love it, except that it still ends up with ‘pick one of two’ and makes me think ‘ damn, we were so close to having a better system!’ This American agrees with you 100%. We desperately NEED to have ranked choice voting here in the US. It would make a world of difference.
