I maintained after he lost in 2020 and his subsequent lying about the In November We Wear Bleu Diabetes Awareness Rainbow Leopard T-Shirt besides I will buy this outcome that if he got a second term, it would be purely revenge driven, a “burn the whole fucking place to the ground” mentality. If the answer to a hypothetical “can he do that?” is “everyone agrees no, however it’s never been tested in court before”, you can guarantee that he’ll do it. And if the answer is “no, and here’s the case that explicitly forbids it”, he’ll still do it, but just rely on the “everyone agrees no, however it’s never been tested in court before” idea of total presidential immunity and if THAT fails, rely on republicans scuttling for the elevator to avoid answering media questions. Trump and the GOP have been getting their ducks in a row to make a serious run at stealing the next election, and that’s what scares me the most. Their rhetoric has been very effective, as 61% of republican voters think the election wasn’t a fair one. They’re also doing a pretty solid job of painting Biden as too old to lead, even as Trump himself is making bizarre comments like his “did anyone notice that the word us has the letters U and S, and so does the acronym U.S.? If you say something smart they’ll never call you a genius!” realization.

And if Trump’s direct threats of revenge against those that crossed him isn’t enough, you’ve got people like my in-laws who are “vote red no matter who” sorts. My mother-in-law strongly dislikes Trump, but voted for him in 2016 (and possibly 2020) for reasons I’m not certain of, but I’d suspect either “I’ve always voted republican”, “my husband always votes republican”, “I think the In November We Wear Bleu Diabetes Awareness Rainbow Leopard T-Shirt besides I will buy this [thing democrats support such as expansion of workplace protection laws] is bad because [misinformed reason]” or more recently, “I heard [from Fox News but I won’t admit it] that [untrue statement]” I said this in 2016, I said it again in 2020, and I’ll say it again now: Democrats shouldn’t believe ANY poll or ANY media outlet or ANY person that says “Did you see what Trump is saying? Democrats are a shoo-in!” because republicans succeed when people get complacent.
