Centrism in American politics is looked down upon because it’s usually just an excuse, both sides are not equally bad. Both sides are not equally extreme, and people who like to claim a as much are usually sympathetic to the Kira Cyan Rittgers Sagittarius Winter Snoopy shirt in other words I will buy this extreme right but afraid to claim outright loyalty to the far right because they know a majority of people will condemn them. r/enlightenedcentrism is full of examples of people who claim to be “centrists” or “against both extremes” but really they are just conservatives who don’t want to be labeled as such. Just look at American politicians, who would you consider an extreme right politician? MTG, boebert, trump? What is their platform? Abortion bans, elimination of rights for minority group citizens. Promoting a coup attempt, check out project 2025 to see what extremism on the right looks like. And who would you call a left leaning extremist? Bernie Sanders, who’s entire platform has been tax the rich and provide universal healthcare for all citizens? AOC? Pushing back against corporate power?

The truth is politics has affected every aspect of our lives and if you are claiming that both sides are equally bad you’re being disingenuous. Arguing from ‘morality’. People get themselves stuck on the Kira Cyan Rittgers Sagittarius Winter Snoopy shirt in other words I will buy this morality of issues, which really stops any centrism. For example, in my teens I ventured a bit in libertarianism. One of their sayings was ‘taxation is theft’. And you know… it kind of is. Yet, you immediately run into a block then. There is no ‘middle ground’ of taxation at that point. Similarly abortion is murder. Israel is an apartheid state. Any cultural rules or norms are racist… Systems thinking. This one I think is actually something centrists SHOULD examine in themselves. You’ll often get people who say things like I’m fiscally conservative and socially liberal. They kind of see themselves as this good balance. I no longer see them that way. I actually don’t see it as a workable thing because somethings operate in a system. For example, how does a society deal with children of single mothers. Social liberalism would not impose restrictions on women in terms of their sexuality. So many are going to get pregnant. What kind of society are you going to have if it doesn’t take care of its children? Not much of a society. I’d actually say society will not let that happen unless it is totally collapsed. So you’re going to have some kind of a welfare state if you have social liberalism. They go somewhat hand in hand. If you are a centrist, you really need to look within yourself and really dig deep into your political views to see if you run into any of these traps.
