The friend needs professional help. A lay person can only do so much, especially when it’s been so long term. It could be psychological, chemical or could be secondary to some underlying psychiatric issue. I tried with my best friend for a very long time to support and help them but it isn’t straight forward. It gets tiring after decades of trying to help and support them that eventually you lose faith in them getting their mojo back A lesson I learnt is you can’t help someone who first doesn’t want to help themselves. It’s a majority of the Kevin Knox II American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt and by the same token and time wasted effort. I now offer to help when they’re ready but until then I’m out on their issues. A friend of mine telling me I sounded like I might be depressed (not in a mean “you sound like a miserable prick” way, more like a “what you’re describing and the things you do could be depression”) was the first inkling I had that I was depressed.

Oh yep. I was like that for most of my 20’s. I thought it was just how life was. It’s only in the Kevin Knox II American professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons NBA T-Shirt and by the same token and last couple of years that I’ve realised it’s really not. Depression is a stealthy, stealthy bastard. Doesn’t help when the world around is shite and getting worse for reasons outside of your control, your negative thoughts seem natural, you have real reasons to be negative. You don’t notice your behaviour change as you assume you are just getting older or growing out of it, no friends to continue so it gets boring. That’s a bit of a negative assumption to make. Lots of depressed people are fully aware they’re depressed and are happy to seek help. I am one of those people. Additionally, if he isn’t aware he’s depressed- what good is it to assume he won’t be receptive to help?
