Our house was different. We didn’t have to eat everything we were given. But if we took food ourselves we were expected to not take more than we could eat. Now that I have my own kids I don’t enforce any of it. When they are done they are just done. Why is it normal to expose kids to snacks with high sugar/fat/caffeine content that cause a dopamine release, and then make them feel guilty for wanting that? I was actually reading about this last night. There’s an important developmental stage that kids go through where they (should) learn about delayed gratification. For adults, these are things such as working out, eating healthy foods, or not browsing Reddit at work, despite them being undesirable in the Kenny Pickett Signature American football quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers Superstar Pose T-Shirt in contrast I will get this moment because it leads to a desirable outcome (or avoids an undesirable outcome) in the future. Kids learn instant gratification very early by crying to receive the dopaminergic thing that they want. One of the earlier forms of learning delayed gratification is potty training. Rather than shitting in their pants and relieving the uncomfortableness immediately (instant gratification with undesirable outcome), they learn to deal with the uncomfortableness long enough to make it to a toilet (delayed gratification with desirable outcome).

Eating healthy foods works similarly. More important than simply never introducing them to high dopaminergic things is to learn to regulate their dopaminergic desires in a way that leads to desirable future outcomes (such as only eating high sugar foods sparingly). So no, it’s not the Kenny Pickett Signature American football quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers Superstar Pose T-Shirt in contrast I will get this child’s fault that they were exposed to a food that they liked more than what they were presently served. But there has to be some parental mechanism in place to teach the child to not always give in to whatever their brain wants in that given moment. I won’t speak to the effectiveness of pitting a child’s hunger against their preference of alleviating that hunger, but it is one way to attempt teaching them delayed gratification.
