All this accomplished was damaging my jaw and giving me an eating disorder which resulted in me being incredibly underweight and malnourished as a child and teen. Forcing your child to eat in any way has been shown time and time again to be an incredibly bad and dangerous thing to do, often leading to lifelong struggles with food. If you’re worried that your kid is only doing this because they like junk food, then you shouldn’t have been giving them junk food, something that not only releases dopamine but is also factually addictive. Foods should be introduced gently and your child’s dislikes should be respected. My mom’s rule growing up when she finally left my dad was that I had to at least try it, just a few bites, if I really didn’t like it I could have something else but no dessert if I’m not going to be eating a full balanced meal. I don’t get it either. As a kid I loved most veg, especially spinach, carrots, beans and cabbage. But I didn’t like pumpkin or beet. Every one used to try to force me to eat pumpkin and beet like it was life or death, even some people who didn’t eat it themselves! Suffice to say, my kids get to choose what they eat and I don’t force them to eat what they don’t want. I do encourage them to try something if they haven’t had it before. My kids hate cooked veg, but will steal frozen veg out of the freezer or eat most of it raw when given the chance. When we used to have a veggie garden, they used to spend all day picking and eating straight from the plants, but put that same thing into a pot and it’s suddenly poisen And yes, some days they don’t want food, and they just eat snacks, and that’s ok too, as long as they are not hungry after If you serve it to yourself, eat what you took. If someone else served it, eat until you are full. Take the leftovers for later if you liked it.
