You have to ask yourself, if you know they’re not going to respond back and it’s going to delay your schedule, are you able to make the Just An Old Guy That’s A Better Pool Player Than You Pool shirt besides I will buy this decision without them? Chances are you can and if you fucked up you’ll be sure to get their attention then. 🙂 Yep, I wish more people would realize this when they have it happen more than once to them and it’s a continuous problem. They aren’t making you a priority for a reason, they are choosing to do this to show that they have better things to do and you just continue on without them. If they complain, then have receipts about how you made them a priority, but they chose to miss it. Depending upon company culture; a director’s job may be primarily putting out fires. I would expect a manager to have a similar schedule, but at a slightly less chaotic. However, cancelling 1:1s is generally a huge way to communicate “I suck as a manager”. I recognize that not every company has the Just An Old Guy That’s A Better Pool Player Than You Pool shirt besides I will buy this money to pay for the headcount, but this is one reason why admins are so valuable. They develop a working relationship with the leadership/execs who they support, use that knowledge to better manage calendars and make scheduling decisions (in a more organized and timely manner), and largely reduce this sort of headache. How many people in the engineering org? As you move up the food chain it can become very difficult to manage. My manager sits over 24 engineers. He’s relatively low down the totem pole but even with monthly 1:1s you’re close to dedicating a week of every month on 1:1s and then probably another week distilling that information and chasing up blockers. Nevermind all the top down meetings you’re expected to attend.
