John really loves his dad and I think he wanted to see the Just A Girl Who Loves Fall and Auburn Peanuts Cartoon Halloween Shirt in other words I will buy this best in him, to remember him as a hero. So dark yet perfect He knew the movie wasn’t accurate, he was present for his rescue and it was nothing like it was depicted in the movie. He’d had no reaction to everything in the movie before that but you could see him getting bothered by that scene. On the other hand, Barry HAD shown up, ready to rock, just a few minutes late. I think his reaction is mostly appreciative of how much his dad had loved him and that his dad gets portrayed as a hero and not a cold blooded killer. One thing I haven’t seen brought up in other comments yet is that there’s actually a second scene in the movie he knows might not be true, when movie Barry has the Afghanistan flashback and yells for a medic after the other soldier is shot, John would know that it conflicts with Barry telling him that he was the medic for his squad and therefore was the one to save Albert. I think it’s Barry getting exactly what he’s wanted the whole series. Barry has constantly been reframing everything he does to make himself seem like a good person, and the movie validates his self-image. I do think the fact that John will mostly remember Barry through that lens is so so dark in that Barry kind of wins.

Barry is a show where people are constantly lying to themselves. Fuches even monologues about it, and breaks through the Just A Girl Who Loves Fall and Auburn Peanuts Cartoon Halloween Shirt in other words I will buy this wall of delusion Hank had built up. Barry and Gene both lie to themselves about their own morals and motives, only to fall back into their patterns whenever given a chance. John has straight-up been told the truth, that his dad was a murderer. But he (seemingly) chooses the lie, and buys into the obvious bullshit the movie presents. I mainly just feel bad for him. He can’t ever deny anything anyone says regarding the movie now; otherwise, it invites a number of questions that lead to a very sticky place, legally speaking. He can’t ever talk about his childhood without implicating his mother indirectly, since no one seems to be particularly aware of the eight years they spent hiding from the cops together. At the same time, he’s not working with the full truth of what occurred; even Sally is not fully familiar with the inner workings of Barry’s mind, and it’s unlikely they ever talk about it to begin with. Guess his only option is what we saw: gaslight himself into believing that the movie is essentially accurate, so he can see his dad as the hero he wanted him to be. Sad shit.
