Parents need to vote in a way that always gives schools more money. School funding is based on local taxes, and although it sucks to pay more in taxes, when parents and community members shoot down levies designed to increase school revenue, what they’re really doing is increasing class size, limiting art and musical (and other enrichment) curriculums, reducing the Jordan Martinook Canadian professional ice hockey player and alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this ability to attract educators with SpEd/Extended Resource credentials, and placing the onus on already underpaid teachers to provide for their classrooms. Furthermore, as much as everyone hates attending meetings, parents need to attend them. Board meetings, curriculum meetings, committee meetings, PTA meetings and conferences. I would go so far as to say they need to get involved and find placement on some or all of these meeting panels in order to express concerns and solutions, but also to be a part in executing solutions and understanding how the district works.

Finally, parents must engage with their children about learning. What subjects do they enjoy? What do they not like? What do they need help in? Have they asked for help, or do they need help asking for help? What’s the Jordan Martinook Canadian professional ice hockey player and alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this social scene like? Do parents and children have a codeword that kids can use over the phone or in text so that the parent knows they don’t feel safe or comfortable and can find a way to get them out to safety? I know it feels like a lot to engage on all of these levels – pocketbook, time and scheduling, and then personally especially sometimes with detached teenagers – but trust me when I say we have to do these things as a community if we want to see the community change. Our societal safety net needs to be improved tremendously so Maslow’s needs can be met not only for students but also the families of students. Universal healthcare, UBI, programs for getting people off the streets, substance abuse treatment programs, etc. would do wonders for student outcomes in the long run. We didn’t get here quickly or by only one problem. First and foremost, students and their families have to have accountability and suffer consequences. Right now education is about making the numbers look good; keep the families happy; and the students passing while doing nothing. That doesn’t work. Students also need to feel education has a purpose. Right now, the kids I teach feel hopeless about affording college, a home, finding a job; whether the world is going to melt; etc. Until we deal with the grinding indifference of the vast majority of students and the lack of purpose they find in school, there is no solution.
