Honestly I think the biggest conceit to this idea is that one plan fits all work situations. Yeah. The OP plan seems aimed at retail/service jobs. But manufacturing is an entirely different situation, as is many office or business to business jobs. B2B your ‘customers’ are other businesses that are meeting or calling during their business hours so it’s absolutely not an issue that you are only open during “normal business hours” since that is when they are working and want to contact you also. Although workers in all types of jobs do need to get things done for their personal life so having direct retail and service open outside “normal business hours” is needed. Of course, those types of direct to consumer places- grocery stores, retail shopping, restaurants- typically are open on weekends and open until later hours, like 9pm or 10pm. It only seems to be a few sectors that deal with personal consumers that want to only be open during core business hours such that people have to take off work to get things taken care of. Government and medical being the main culprits.

I don’t see the Johnny Cash American country singer-songwriter T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this issue… If you can’t have two shifts working simultaneously then your company only offers early and late shift jobs. Oh so you refer to nightshifts then? I still fail to see how they pose an issue for the day 3 shift system. Early night 21-3, late night 3-9 both alligning reasonably with other business shifts. Commute may be an issue but that’s already the case with night shifts in many places. That’s a fair point. It’s just that each caveat moves a bit further from the idealized system described in the OP. I mean as far as workers are concerned night shifts are anything but ideal one way or another. In some cases however they are simply a necessity, or like in your case a question of efficiency, the burden of which can be alleviated with higher hourly wages on nightshifts.
