It’s rather brutal but still better then a sudden 8+ change. It also means that your sunrises and sunsets are roughly in the right place in the day and not out of wack. The ship always keeps local time, and it crosses time zones on average every day when it’s steaming back. In truth it’s not 8 straight days, but where we are in theater is 8 hours ahead of EST, so there are 8 days of going back an hour. In my grandpa’s days on a cargo ship, on the days they crossed timezone borders, each of the three watches would adjust the ship’s clock by 20 minutes instead of just one watch getting their shift extended by the full hour Sounds like your gramps worked for people whose mission in life wasn’t to just completely shit all over everybody that worked for them

When I was bartending, the clock would go from 1:59 to 1:00 and all the drunks would start cheering, and we’d laugh and tell them to get the fuck out and close at “1:00” lol. Closing time was 2:00, btw. Same here. I also bartended in a state where we could serve until 3am. We stayed open the extra hour when clocks went back, but had to close an hour “early” when clocks went forward. In my country, you have to work an extra hour but you will be paid for it. When it’s opposite and the clocks go forward, you get to work an hour less but still be paid your normal amount.
