I don’t know how to parent. At all. Kids are chaos factories. Babysitting has always been a nightmare. How do I talk to a kid? How do I think like a kid, meeting them on their level? How do I discipline a kid? It’s like asking a dog to shut down a nuclear reactor. Also, I’m nonbinary. I can’t see myself as either a mother or a father. That’s one factor I rarely see mentioned. I’ve just never wanted any. No need to bring others into the existential crisis of life. I live in Japan and I’m a foreigner, so there’s absolutely no pressure on me to have kids and it’s great. Steadily approaching mid 40’s with no regrets, just plenty of money, sleep, holidays, a clean apartment and peace and quiet. I see no downsides. I don’t like children. I don’t want the added responsibility. I want to enjoy my adult life, spending all my time and money on myself and my partner/friends. I value my time too much to waste it watching over someone 24/7. I don’t sleep well anyway so if a baby is waking me up throughout the night I don’t know how I would survive. I think that overpopulation is a problem and I don’t want to contribute to it. I hate ‘baby talk’ — my sister has a baby and she has become so disinteresting now, all she talks about is shit about how her kid can insert pointless milestone (like 99% of other children in the world; frankly I’d be more interested if it couldn’t do these basic functions such as sit up and walk, etc.) I also don’t really ‘get’ kids, I don’t know how to do all the ‘baby stuff’ that they find entertaining (doing voices and what not). I also don’t think I could love a child unconditionally, if it made bad life decisions I wouldn’t be one of the parents that would try and help or forgive unconditionally.
