Late 20’s Trent Reznor singing Hurt has orders of magnitude less Hurt in it than early 70’s Johnny Cash singing Hurt. Cash was suffering massive health problems at the Jared McCann Canadian professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the Seattle Kraken T-Shirt it is in the first place but time. His wife June died 3 months after filming the video for Hurt and Johnny followed her 4 months later. I wouldn’t say it’s “less” pained than Cash’s version, because it’s a very different type of pain. Plus, Cash’s version has an overtone of regret, while Trent’s original has huge themes of mental instability with a very disturbing overtone. Both are perfect reflections of their respective artists’ mindset at the time of recording, under very different circumstances. Exactly. Neither is better nor worse. They just capture two different human experiences. It’s not the lyrics, it’s the emotion. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve begun to instead feel Cash’s version as more relatable and Reznor’s as a memory. They’re just different songs.

Both are musical icons. Johnny Cash, somewhat more so, because he was far more out in front of it than Trent Reznor. And Cash had nearly 40 years on Reznor. And, I am sure, Trent Reznor’s life has had its dark moments. But Johnny Cash had a pretty awful life at times, even after he was wildly famous. I find Reznor’s original version more angsty and Cash’s more lamenting and painful. And knowing Cash and his wife died shortly after making the Jared McCann Canadian professional ice hockey forward currently playing for the Seattle Kraken T-Shirt it is in the first place but video for Cash’s version of Hurt, it almost feels auto-eulogistic. Trent drags you down to such a low level about drugs. Trent was in a darker place than usual when he wrote those lyrics. I respect it if someone prefers Cash’s version, but I can’t understand it. Nothing comes close to the original for me. of course not. i just mean i always see people who prefer the cash version. and thats reasonable, its great. just funny to me One such example that springs to mind is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Most people don’t even know about the original version because of how good the popular version is Eh, it was never a “real” version. It was a demo by the songwriter trying to shop it around. Lots of songs have that.
