According to the Asia-Pacific Tourism Association, just 10-40% of tourists go back to Vietnam, while the rate is 80% in Thailand. Nonsense. Tourism is a priority for every country that is worth visiting. It’s not only a source of foreign income but an important factor in the acquisition of soft power in the international scene. I’m not a sexpat. I hate scams anytime anywhere. Reasonable locals shared their experiences with me. They didn’t blame the victims You’re going to experience this where ever you go. It just seems more prevalent in Vietnam, especially the old quarters. Places like Korea or Japan just have these hustler more hidden. Keep in mind there are shitty people where ever you go and learn to recognize the bad stuff. Also everything is very cheap, Im not sure where you are from but you can always let it go. I know it could just be your principals but Im not gonna stress over the little money they take, unless its like big money. You could also move hotels, check out the shopping malls like Aion, Lotte Tower, and etc. I have only been to the old quarters once and never went back lol Besides Japan, it’s the only other country I fell in love with during my travels. The food, culture, history, and the people are all amazing. Im probably biased though cause I grew up with Vietnamese people and my girlfriend is Vietnamese :shrug:

And if you think old quarter Hanoi was bad you’re not ready for HCM. You need to learn to bargain and stand firm in Vietnam. First, it sounds like you’ve never been to or haven’t spent much time in the developing world. When it comes to things like when people do construction and make noise, cities in Vietnam are not like, say, Beverly Hills. You can either treat it as a part of the travel experience, which is supposed to expose you to the differences in the world, or let it drive you crazy. Second, the Old Quarter is the most touristy part of Hanoi and where anyone looking to take advantage of tourists will do so. Get out of the Old Quarter and you’ll have a very different experience. Why have you decided on visiting the 3 big cities? Obviously you will have a higher rate of scammers and hecklers, as well as loud noise. You are in a massive city. Go to a smaller town where it’s quiet, honest and less obnoxious.
