Black culture, on the other hand, emerged as a by-product of slavery. When you separate a group of people SPECIFICALLY because of the color of their skin, you inadvertedly create group with a shared struggle based around that factor, whether they like it or not, whether it was their intent or not. When that group is ostracized, subjugated, oppressed, they are forced to create their own culture based on that subjugation, based on the color of their skin. That’s what people mean when they “act as if” white Americans have no culture of their own. They mean that they have their own cultures, which can also be shared by people of other ethnicities too, because they’re not based on whiteness itself. But you can’t be white and say you belong in black culture. Because a big part of that culture is a shared oppression imposed on them against their will due to the color of their skin.
