Literally was my childhood. It’s not ok for anyone to eat food that’s spoiled or eat to the point that they literally get sick. Food should be shared out of love. Also hitting kids is counterproductive and wrong. Now we know that childhood spanking is linked to health problems like depression and anxiety and adulthood, and S&M – no kink shaming, but it’s ironic since a lot of those who hit their kids think they’re making them “normal”. But discipline has its place. Being very overweight is like chain smoking – you lose a decade of life expectancy. Parents are in a bind because little kids actually dislike bitter food because of evolution; it’s so they don’t eat poison. When I was a kid Lima beans were like the devil’s droppings. Some kids would malnourish themselves or give themselves diabetes if they controlled their diet completely. It’s not abuse for a parent to make their kids eat some perfectly edible health food, within reason.

A kid can be hungry, or they can eat what you made. It’s important to give them that choice. What you’re describing isn’t that. I literally fell asleep on my plate of peas and stayed there alllll night because I refused to eat them. Grandma was militant that way but I imagine it’s due to her upbringing. I had a horrible eating disorder up until last year. Now that I have kids of my own, I’ve decided to NOT be like my dad and not comment on what and how my kids eat. I offer a variety of food and often tell them “listen to your body, when your tummy says I’m full, stop eating.” And many things along the lines of that. There are times I want my kids to eat, and I will try to encourage them, but if they don’t want to eat, I’m not going to force them. If they get hungry later, usually I say let’s get a snack to tie us over until our next meal, but I try super hard to make sure I have no shame towards them with food.
