My aunt and my mother told stories about back in the days when women wearing pants was seen as “cross dressing” and broke school dress codes. What’s creepier was one of my elementary school teachers, who announced proudly on the first day that the principle made him stop enforcing the practice of demanding all the girls wear dresses and sit in the front row. We were too young to understand what he was getting at, but I wore pants and sat in the back anyhow. In the 4th grade, probably around 1968 or so, the elementary school that I attended changed their dress code and allowed girls to wear pants. My Mom was a seamstress and made all our clothes and she made me some really cute pants outfits. All us girls in class got together and decided to wear pants the day it changed. So a handful of us wore pants. All the girls had pants on under their dresses except me. So the teacher asked all the girls with dresses on to come to the front of the class. The girls took their pants off and went to the front of the class with all the other girls that wore dresses. I was the only girl that remained sitting with the boys. She said “Now boys, don’t girls that wear dresses look better than girls in a pants”? Of course they all said yes. She was mean old lady. I told my Mom when I got home and she made sure to send me to school the next day in another cute pant outfit. Sorry such a long story, but your comment made me think of it.

I was born in 70 and am absolutely shocked at this. We never realized that just a few short years before, this was still a thing. I agree, 10 years seems like a short time, but it isn’t in terms of changes in our society. Even though most times I think we haven’t budged a bit on some things. Correction, I was born in 60, so, it would have been 1969, not 68. My mom was generally very supportive of my clothing choices.
