When I initially told people I was moving to Mexico you’d have thought I told them I was going to Mars (there’s no water and the I’m Multitasking I Can Listen Ignore And Forget Dragon shirt in other words I will buy this buildings explode!) but with narcos (they kidnap and sell tourists back to their families!) and that’s just Mexico. I can’t imagine the ignorance around Nigeria. I will say tho, when I started studying Mexican history it became very clear to me why white western media makes people who are willing to trade comfort for freedom into villains. If we all realised the liveable realities of overthrowing someone with their boot on your neck, we might take actions that would threaten the oligarchy. Now when I hear ignorance about developing countries I immediately wonder who benefits from me thinking (insert country/people) is “bad” and why?

Even people at my workplace look down upon me because I’m from India. They think I’m rolling in filth everyday and trying to scam people or harass women online. I’ve stopped thinking about it or wasting my time trying to explain. Last year, I went on a solo trip across Switzerland. Some of my colleagues from the I’m Multitasking I Can Listen Ignore And Forget Dragon shirt in other words I will buy this US and Canada became toxic af and passive aggressive when they came to know that. In the end, I’ve realized there is little you can do. A large section of humanity is unhappy with life and struggling to get things done. Combine that with carefully engineered propaganda on social media and you have lots of people quickly jumping to false conclusions. If your coworkers are verbalizing these things, they should be reported. You know you don’t have to put up with such a toxic and biased environment or shrug your shoulders at it. You don’t get it. Labour laws are poorly enforced in India. This gives employers a chance to exploit. Lot of the jobs are outsourced to India to save on costs. There is no use trying to verbalize these things, I’ll most likely lose my job if I did. Supply of workers in India is always 10X the demand, so I’ll be replaced easily as well.
