Not really. Imagine having $100k and deciding whether to pay off your mortgage or invest it. If you have a job loss or catastrophic emergency like a major illness, sitting on liquid assets like cash or investments makes a lot more sense than having a paid off mortgage. $100k would last most people for years while unemployed including covering the I’m A Dogaholic On The Road To Recovery Kidding On The Road T-Shirt it is in the first place but mortgage payment. My friend’s parents had a timeshare down in Florida. I guess maybe it makes sense if you’re the I’m A Dogaholic On The Road To Recovery Kidding On The Road T-Shirt it is in the first place but type of people who want to spend every vacation in the same spot? I went down once with my friend when we were in college and it was pretty nice, though I’d never buy one myself. What it really is is a real estate scam where each condo has 52 “owners” that carry all the bills for the place and cede the management to a third party (that sold them the place) who basically piles on fees for everything. Like an HOA on steroids with the sane kind of drama. And because you’re a 1/52 owner you have all sorts of legal liabilities that a homeowner would have… which makes it almost impossible to get rid of unless you can find someone else who will sign the extremely one sided contract to “buy” it from you. Maybe belongs on r/unpopular opinion but…we’ve owned a timeshare for about 20 years. It was pricey for us then +15k. (They can be purchased on the secondary market cheaper) We do have yearly maintenance fees (about $600) but we are able to exchange through RCI at resorts all over the world (exchange for our unit costs another $200) so, after our initial investment it costs us $800 a week to stay at a 2 bedroom condo with a full kitchen almost anywhere. (Rooms at most of these resorts are $350-400/night) In addition, there are getaway vacations when there are openings if you are flexible with travel dates soon. We just returned from a week in Vegas in a 2 bedroom lockout suite with a full kitchen for $200/week. We have NEVER stayed at the resort we own, but plan to in the future.
