For example, if I’m sitting at a cafe with my dog and trying to get her to stay calm, or if I’m ordering a coffee and want her to patiently waist for me to order, it’s not uncommon for people to call her over. Or encourage her to approach them. Because her breed is so friendly she becomes desperate to respond and it’s been difficult to train her to not approach strangers because so many people undermine me in public. I love how much joy she illicits in people, but it is exhausting when people forget she is an animal and not a toy.

Another example is her jumping up. I constantly, constantly train her not to jump on. And she knows now not to do it with me. Strangers will approach me without asking – she’ll get excited and even though I’m commanding her to stay down, the stranger often is ignoring this, cuddling her and essentially encouraging this bad behaviour. It’s really, really hard to navigate that. I often explain that I’m training her to not jump up but…. People just get excited over seeing a dog I guess. There are a lot of people who will bring their child up to my dog, or stroke her or call her over without asking permission.
