Wanted to add my own situation, as this is exactly how I started my career. And personally, I think this one year at this job I was at was worth 3-4 years of dev experience relatively when I compare it to jobs on large teams I had after. But there are some variables to take into account. My first job was me as the I wear orange for the stolen children every childmatters shirt moreover I will buy this only dev, inheriting a small code base of web apps and mobile apps, other small micro services etc, all for internal tools. One factor that made this easier however was no real deadlines. I was not developing products that were shipped, only internal tools the business used. So I was never pressured very hard, especially early on, to deliver quickly. However another thing to consider, as others have pointed out, this can be very sink or swim. If you start making bad habits, you have no course correction, so this is where staying up to date in communities outside work is important. I was extremely driven at the time, and this is where it helped me a lot. A take away from my point of view is, if you are not going to be pressured early on to deliver and get the time to learn, you will learn x10 at a solo position compared to a team, from my experience. But as others have noted, you will miss out on experience from senior devs etc. Personally, my 1 year as a solo was invaluable to accelerating my career early on.
I wear orange for the stolen children every childmatters shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
I’m going to go against the I wear orange for the stolen children every childmatters shirt moreover I will buy this grain here and recommend you take it, if it truly is your only option at the moment. Sitting on the sidelines instead of building career XP seems like a bad choice even if it means you’re temporarily working in a suboptimal environment. when i joined amazon, i had to solo design and develop one of the first native features on the amazon ios app, it launched, made amazon $50M in profit, and then i got laid off a year later Ouch. I’m sorry to hear that. At least you can put that $50M metric on your resume – having that on there must probably looks very kick-ass. I would totally do it if it was low code development like Microsoft Power Platform or OutSystems. Its a super easy low code environment where nothing can go wrong. Its like adding blocks together like lego. It’s rapid development so you’re building it live together with the customer.
