It’s an effect of increased polarisation. If you think your “side” are the I get my attitude from my freakin’ awesome dad born in october shirt Besides,I will do this “good guys” then it’s not just the other side that are bad guys, it’s everyone who isn’t on your side. See the ludicrous strawman type examples all over this thread – “so if I want to pet kittens and the bad people want to stamp on their heads, maybe we should just pet half of them and stamp on half of their heads? Fuckin’ centrists!”. People are smart enough to know that’s not what centrism is about bu they’re not centrists so they have to attack everyone who is. Politics is about power, not philosophy. When you say you’re centrist you’re communicating “I’m better than you.” Because you’re not acknowledging anything other than a binary system. And that’s a weird thing to say seeing as there is a constant tendency for tribalism and moralising the opposition. I defend civil liberties, progressivism, a free market system with a decent welfare state. I also defend public healthcare and education systems, some state interventionism when necessary. Just a few examples of policies and ideals I support, what am I? I don’t feel represented by communist, nationalist or conservative ideals. I’m not automatically moralising the left and right, although there are things on some ideologies I simply don’t tolerate (like authoritarianism and conservative policy). I’m not communicating that I’m better than X. I’m communicating the place I think better describes my views, this taking a side or rather a label that I feel best describes me.

I feel the I get my attitude from my freakin’ awesome dad born in october shirt Besides,I will do this same way. I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying the other people are, and this is what they are thinking. Just let me be a centrist. Getting tired of the far right calling me a commie and the far left calling me a capitalist pig Centrists are on neither side, so both sides see them as a potential threat or friend. People on the far left or right will lean towards the threat and then accuse you of being ignorant or stupid in. A typical person on the left or right would have a goal of a conversation to convince you to see things how they do. I think social media has unleashed a lot of angry people onto public platforms. And I also think social media likes that. It keeps the revenue earning click bait clicking. In essence they are making money out of our anger at the system, left or right. Yeah, I’m looking at you as well Reddit.
