The reality is that most voters are in fact not purely liberal or purely conservative . They are mostly a mix of the I get my attitude from my freakin’ awesome Dad born in February shirt Furthermore, I will do this two ideologies. But the political reality is that democrat or republican are our only choices. World’s not in a great place and roughly maintaining the status quo isn’t a good approach. How many centrists from history do you know that we would look back at and say “they had the right idea”? Because people that base their entire personality around a political party can’t accept that the majority of humans are ambivalent about most things. I believe I’m a centrist…. But the lefties tell me I’m conservative and conservatives would say I’m not conservative!! Lol… Plenty of centrists around (in fact id say most of us are central politically) but if you read Reddit and other SM? We don’t exist. One of them, we’ll call it absolute centrism or global centrism exists at a middle point between the farthest right and the farthest left of ALL thought that is on the left-right political axis. So you’ve got Nazis on the right, and some kind of communists on the left, and then we’re put centrism right in the middle. So the reason that leftists like myself don’t like is because we believe you can’t have middle ground with Nazis and that middle ground with Nazis is still essentially okay with fascism, and fascism is intolerable. For those on the right, I assume the calculus would be roughly the same, that they would find communism intolerable and any middle ground would still be essentially being fine with communism.

The other centrism, US political centrism is the I get my attitude from my freakin’ awesome Dad born in February shirt Furthermore, I will do this middle point between Democrat and Republican policies, which on the absolute scale is still farther right than most Americans because on the absolute scale both Democrats and Republicans are right wing parties. So the reason that leftists don’t like that is that it’s farther right than Democrats and we’re not necessarily fans of them. I can’t speak for far right people but I would assume they would be happy with this kind of centrism because it’s significantly closer to their side than absolute centrism. Other countries probably also have two centrisms, where their major parties define a boundary around acceptable political thought that excludes some ideas from the far right and far left, which can get one confused when talking about “centrism”
