This man is a predator. Document. Seek advice. Go to HR. Don’t be alone with him. Don’t share anymore personal details. And don’t listen to any of his bullshit. But, you’re absolutely right with your comments. It’s creepy, weird, and wayyyy inappropriate. I’d call it grooming. If I were your parent, I’d be telling you to quit immediately. If he pushes back at all, blame mom or dad or another trusted adult. Avoid being alone with him, and there is zero reason for you to work any notice period. People won’t care, you’re young, this won’t matter, don’t listen to any of his lines, quit and leave immediately. Block him everywhere and be careful. Find out what is legal in your area to defend yourself (pepper spray, mace, etc.), make sure you have some sort of tracking app on your phone for family/bf/whoever you trust. This doesn’t mean you should be frightened!! Just be careful. You can always be generic and vague, and turn questions around on others to change the spotlight on yourself and steer the conversation to something more work appropriate. You can always ask “well what do you think?”, this one is favored by narcs keeps em talking they’ll reveal everything to you the more you ask abt their brilliant ideas. There’s also “is that an appropriate thing to say?” This one requires more self confidence and control which will require you to be brave, “let’s check back in in a minute and we can discuss more later”, this one’s not as affective cuz it’s dependent on them getting distracted and not being able to follow up again, “since we have so much free time let’s take advantage of it to discuss our upcoming [insert goals, project]” even as corny as it sounds corporate lingo is like a switch in their lizard brain. I’m not sure why you’re taken more seriously for using that kind of jargon but it works. I’m just half way through the I am an union ironworker do you think sane person would do shirt in other words I will buy this first paragraph, and, yes, it’s fucked up. Go to human resources. Keep any textt/email any evidence I’m 46 M and a manager and have had younger women working for me. I never once asked about their personal life in this way. If THEY bring it up, then I will converse about their husband or boyfriend or whatever because I actually care if they have personal problems and want to help them integrate their work life successfully to their personal life. A happy, content employee is a good employee. Asking if you have a boyfriend is kind of weird., but if it’s followed up with some genuine care about how you are doing, then it’s probably harmless. Some people are just not that skilled with innocent social interactions, even managers. Else, I would consider it inappropriate and unprofessional. I do ask about the bf/gf just to know and on file during application. but I never say anything or comment or advise about it. Unless I am asked but only within my family.
