Hinman isn’t the I Am A Son OF God I Was Born In June My Scars Veteran shirt and I will buy this only Texan who’s been forced to place more trust in grassroots methods of community protection than in top-down governmental aid. “It feels like we’re being abandoned, again, by leadership that refuses to do the bare minimum to protect the people who live here,” says Emma Decker, 29, a resident of Georgetown, Texas. “I’m in awe of local leadership, the Austin council members who worked hand in hand with mutual aid groups to get food and water to people without electricity or water for a week, and all of the volunteers who made it happen. But I just don’t know how sustainable it is to expect grassroots movements and volunteer orgs to compensate for high-level greed and incompetence. And they shouldn’t have to, you know?”
