Back them in NYC if you bought your MetroCard on station machines it would only give change back with these coins. The ticket machines are so ancient they were designed only to give coins back, so as prices rose and larger amounts of change were needed…they used Susan B Anthony and then Sacagawea dollar coins in the returns. They’re also commonly used in post office machines for change too.
