Coop not being seemless (killing boss disconnects) and certain bosses disabling entire areas for coop. That’s probably the Hotter than a hoochie coochie country music shirt and I will buy this only major con I can think of really. Story’s kinda garbage. I haven’t played any of the previous DS games, so I probably lack context. But the story should be accessible to new players too. I’ve beaten the game but still have no real idea why I did any of the things I did, or what the overall story even is. Don’t know what a tarnished is, don’t understand the significance of the erdtrees, don’t know what the Elden Ring is, don’t know why defeating the Elden Beast triggers the end of the game. It all feels totally random to me. Ranni’s ending and storyline are the only thing that make the game notable from a narrative perspective, and it’s because there’s a disproportionate amount of content included compared to the others. Even Fia, who you talk to for an ungodly amount of time in a series of the world’s most drawn-out and uncomfortable spooning sessions, barely justifies her own narrative — you MIGHT get some closure for it IF you catch Rogier at several specific points, work your way to the root of Stormveil, exhaust more dialogue, run back and forth with Ranni, and then continue with Fia’s questline. Or, you can be like me, think Fia is pretty interesting, start working your way through her quest, lose steam halfway through because she’s gone seven levels of abstraction about lore you seem to have missed, pivot to Ranni because she, Blaidd, and Iji have the most interesting dynamic in the game, and find out afterwards that Fia’s ending all would’ve made sense and been pretty satisfying if you hadn’t rested at the Roundtable at the wrong time, sending Rogier to the farm upstate and leaving you with the world’s most difficult connect-the-dots with the cursemark in your inventory.

There’s also virtually no incentive to run the Hotter than a hoochie coochie country music shirt and I will buy this FF or the Dung-Eater’s endings unless you hate Hyetta or are working through some things, respectively. I really don’t like how some of the quests are set up. Thinking of you, Sellen and Jerren. Literally the only way I’d ever complete that quest is if I look it up online. I like the idea of no quest logs but at some point you’re just requiring me to look shit up on the wiki, and that takes me out of the game. Imo, going open world made the difficulty and pacing feel a bit all over the place. I knew that the difficulty of the major bosses was intended to encourage me to explore The Lands Between, get some better gear and level up until I felt strong enough. Consequently, the Early game felt quite slow until I finally beat Margit. All was well afterwards, until I got to Radahn. I remember going away and coming back after levelling my character ~20 times but I didn’t feel any stronger. The absolute unit still seemed to be nearly one shotting me. Then I discovered the Rotten Breath spell.
