Countries often give you an “allowance” (either monetary value or physical amount) of stuff you can buy abroad and bring back, if you buy more than that allowance you have to pay taxes and/or fees on your return to the Hello Kitty Darth Vader shirt in addition I really love this country. Used to be that on flights into the USA there was a form given to everyone, you were supposed to list everything you bought and were bringing back, including the dollar value. You handed the form to an officer standing at a desk in your way out of baggage claim. They’d ask if you had any plant material or seeds, or had been on a farm. It was maybe 10 years ago I stopped seeing that form. You’re supposed to know the rules, and if for example you’re bringing back a whole case of whiskey that you bought in Scotland or whatever, you owe duty and must declare it at customs and immigration. But these days, there’s no form on the plane and nobody asks. If you don’t tell the passport officer that you have the whiskey, and the detectors and dogs and whatever else don’t find it, and you aren’t selected for special screening, then you just walk on through. Two things about bringing things back to your home country from abroad that you have to fill out on forms before re-entry:

1.) You are allowed to bring a certain amount of goods back home tax-free (with specific limits for tobacco and alcohol). Anything beyond that, you need to pay a tax called “duty.” 2.) You cannot bring certain foods, plants, or animals back with you from some countries, because they might have diseases or pests. And you obviously cannot bring back illegal drugs, counterfeit/stolen items, or parts of endangered animals like tusks or horns or furs. I went for 2 months in 1995 and that included airfare and my share of the Hello Kitty Darth Vader shirt in addition I really love this car (4 people went). We went to 9 countries It’s not the expense, it’s the saving up enough money and time off to spend two weeks doing this. Two weeks in Europe is a luxury when you have only two weeks holidays per year
