Edit: median salary in 1982 was ~$24,000, so 1 months salary for this trip, plus another few weeks money for food, drinks etc Americans who visited recently are saying that they spent way more. Staying at five star hotels and flying first class will do it. Because they haven’t done the H-Town Baseball the Golden Era shirt it is in the first place but trip themselves and they’ve never checked the prices? Seems pretty straightforward… I can fly to American from the Uk for £500 and then pick up a cheap airline inside America for very cheap to take me anywhere. No TSA, security in general was more lax, travel agents did alot of the heavy lifting when it came to bookings. It was much easier flying overseas. English wasn’t as a widespread in 1983 and there was no Internet and mobile phones to help you find information on the fly. I’d say it’s much easier to travel now than then, even if security is tougher. Travel is more accessible these days. It’s a great thing, but it also comes along with choice paralysis and busier destinations/airports/metros. Yes I know I can book an agent anytime I want… but it’s certainly not the social norm today and isn’t how typical people travel. Certainly won’t find a trip like this with an agent for 5k. I recently did a 12 day tour of Italy with Trafalgar Tours and loved it. I’ve been to Italy before and have no problem mapping out my own itinerary, but I wanted to take a true vacation where I didn’t have to make any decisions. Granted, my friend and I were the youngest people in the group, but we had plenty of time to explore on our own. It was a great experience and Trafalgar takes good care of you. It was about $3k for the tour (with lodging), not including flights.

I agree that these types of trips aren’t popular with people under 30 like myself. I got so much crap for going with a tour group, but I honestly loved being able to show up in the H-Town Baseball the Golden Era shirt it is in the first place but hotel lobby every morning and get whisked away to the best sightseeing. No stress about lodging and transportation, just vibes. I only knew about them because my mom and I did a Europe tour when I was 22 and I loved it. Trafalgar has a sister company called Contiki that’s geared towards the 18-35 age group! I don’t. Seems extremely un-flexible and blind tbh. Can’t imagine it, you’re at the mercy of others for planning things and giving you good prices. Now as you are ordering the trip, you have seen the hotel room in 3d, looked at the streetview of the whole city, looked at all the places to go on google.
