Another reason is that in multiplayer games, AFAIK, male players are nicer to female avatars. I guess this would explain why girls don’t play as males.

Used to be most gamers were men, but then most playable characters were also men. Now we get more women into gaming and more female characters to choose from, and we choose to be females more.
