Let them have fun man. Too lenient. Gave me too much of what I want. Cared too much about how felt instead of how strong and compitent and willful I was.

As a young kid I’ve had a severe alergy to dust mites, which are found in normal dust. Thick immovable carpet on the floor, never thoroughly cleaned, bad dusty bed and dust on all surfaces, especially on the wardrobes and curtains. I was very active and a few jumps on the carpet would lift the dust and I’d soon gasp for air with whistling sounds and cough viciously afterwards. This was mostly neglected by parents, despite having means to help me, and I didn’t know how to help myself. I know because mother would yell at me for coughing and pinch my arms till I cried, and crying while suffocating is really not fun, she would just look at me and leave me then, which was so confusing. Father just didn’t care, he had his books, fishing, hunting, garage stuff – the garage was right under my room, where he often painted metal parts using air compressors, so with my breathing problems I also inhaled the paint quite often, and that would be during the night because that’s when he did that, for some reason. I remember being absolutely terrified of mosquitos, which are abundand where I’ve lived, and I didn’t want to open the windows for air during summers. If someone opened them, my room would be full of mosquitos, and I would stay the night awake trying to swat them, and I was around 4-7 then. Opening the windows is all mother did in that period to “help” my dust issue. After years of this, they decided to bring me to a doctor who ordered regular, sometimes daily injection therapy and I finally got the inhaler way later, when the allergy lessened (and to think, medical care was free). They helped me only because my coughing and audible breathing annoyed them.
Eventually when I got to teens and started thinking for myself, I’ve distanced myself emotionally from them and they are still surprised I wouldn’t hug or call them.I won’t make such mistakes that’s for sure. My kids’ needs will come first even if I have to demolish all my plans and comfort. Anything for a chance that my kids grow up healthy and wish to have me close. Mostly, telling them I love them. I was 42 before my Mother said she loved me and that was only in response to me saying it to her. Also my parents, when we were in public, would always say ‘That man will say something if you don’t stop doing X’ or ‘That woman will come over and shout at you’. I guess that was their way of keeping us quiet but Christ did i have issues with confidence and assertiveness when I left home. I was afraid of my own shadow.
