That’s what I’ve done. I’m a senior software engineer but I work below market rate by a substantial amount because my work/life balance is unbeatable. I have suffered severe burnout at other companies before, which almost had me throw it all away (and not just the Hank Aaron in Atlanta Braves American Baseball Champion T-Shirt Also,I will get this job!). Avoid surrendering the control over your time. Unless you are a business owner or a high level employee (Director, President, C-Suite) working more than 60 hours will be difficult to enjoy, especially if you have other aspirations or interests. The older you get, the likelihood that your time becomes more valuable, and finely managing your hours becomes more challenging between with everything life throws at you (family, hobbies, etc). What it boils down to: if you’re young with little obligations and genuinely see future growth and potential, then go for the new job. If you don’t think you’ll like the job or have other future life events coming down the pipeline (getting married, having kids, wanting to travel) 60hrs will be a headache.

It’s typically avg salary over x number of years x number of years worked x multiplier. Thus, your 130k is actually SIGNIFICANTLY more. Keep in mind that trades hours might be a lot harder than office job hours. What I mean is that after a full day, you still have energy to do things like go biking and all of those activities. With a more physically demanding job, you’ll lose energy a lot faster so it’s very likely that you’ll just be too tired after working to do any of those things you enjoy. I say it’s not worth it. No one has ever said in their last moments: “I wish I would have worked harder”. Live your life. Enjoy the precious little time you have with your kids and raise them well. A good raised kid will give you a lot more later in life. Work/life balance should be more important. Do not do the 60 hour work week. I didn’t get the pay up front and had a nervous breakdown. I’m on disability, Ssdi, section 8 and snap. I’m lucky I can afford a cat.
