My (Canadian) parents told me, as long as I’m actively studying, or have a job and am saving for a place I can live with them as long as needed. I’m not in America but in Europe. While I haven’t heard of anyones parents kicking them out, most people voluntarily prefer to leave quite early to enjoy more freedom, like have friends over until late hours. Sometimes parents even help with rent. That said there is a cultural expectation that you are an adult at 18. This manifests sometimes into kids moving out at that age, whether it be to college or starting their own lives and livelihood. I’ve heard people say this Hangmans Joke Skeleton Shirt so you should to go to store and get this but nobody I know has done this. We don’t kick our kids out, period. And mine have always known that wherever I am, they are welcome. They’ve lived with both me and their dad at different times.

As for me, I had good but strict parents and I didn’t get kicked out but I definitely wanted out asap. But I never felt like I could go back home. I mean I knew I could in an extreme emergency, but I wouldn’t have felt welcome even then. So I allowed a lot of abuse that I know I wouldn’t have put up with if I’d known I could just go home. I made sure my kids always knew that they can come back to Mama if they ever need to, with no questions asked. I think it’s increasingly common to have Americans live with their families longer because of the Hangmans Joke Skeleton Shirt so you should to go to store and get this increased cost of living and decreased affordable housing options, but you’re right that Americans don’t view living with their parents the same way as many other cultures. My husband is from another country and though we both just stayed at our parents’ homes during college breaks and moved out permanently a couple months after graduation that was expected of me and absolutely wild to his family. His sisters (he has no brothers) all lived with their parents until marriage and were not expected to pay rent or contribute to bills, though they worked. It wasn’t that they couldn’t afford to move out, it’s just a cultural difference. My parents basically expected my siblings and I to be in school full time or to work and pay rent (not market value and it only happened with one of the 6 of us because everyone else graduated and moved out before the end of the summer). I do think a lot of Americans have an idea that independence (financial and otherwise) is incredibly valuable and I think that plays a role. But with the current economic and housing situation, I think staying at home longer has already become more of a trend and will continue to head in that direction because moving out just isn’t feasible for so many people.
