I think the expectation of being able to move out at any time is based on the X-ers and older who could work 40 hours a week and rent a decent apartment. Our kids can stay with us as long as they want, we always tell them that. I’d expect them to contribute a bit towards bills in relation to whatever is reasonable based on their income, and contribute to efforts around the house and property. If they are full time school and no income that’s fine too. It just needs to be a reasonable responsibility based arrangement. I want my kids to be self sufficient, capable, happy people, and kicking them out at an arbitrary age is probably not the best way to attain that. I think it’s good to set that expectation yet still being a safety net for your children. How many times do we hear about adult children with no ambition, no prospects for creating a family, no drive to reach higher in their career, no desire to do much outside of video games? Some parents enable that behavior and it leads to severe depression when the child hits 34, still works entry-level jobs, has no meaningful romantic relationship, and no real reason to strive for any of those things. It’s one thing to stay with your parents for a year or two so you can afford a down payment on a house, it’s quite another to stay with your parents because you don’t want to become an adult. Growing up my dad always told us at 18 you can go to college or you can get a job but you can’t stay here. Despite how it sounds, he isn’t actually a hard-ass like that. He wouldn’t have actually forced me to live on the street if I couldn’t support myself but it sets an expectation of self-sufficiency. I tell my kids the same thing today despite the fact that I absolutely would let them move back in with me if they fell on hard times.

So it was more, “we take care of you until you can do it on your own, you just can’t stay here.” Most families accept the idea that it is very difficult for any adult at the age of 18 to move out and live on their own. However, there might be situations where it is better for the child to move out because of abuse, neglect, or even family conflict. This old school mentality, maybe our parents got kicked out because the parents knew if the got a job they could get a house. Nowadays you can’t get anything working on your own if you have any kind of life outside of work.
